Steven Butler's Family History Website

Bertie County NC Butlers

For more than forty years, I thought that a man named Alfred Butler, born about 1824 in Bertie County, North Carolina, was my paternal great-great-grandfather. Then, in 2019, as the result of a DNA test, I learned to my surprise that I am not a Butler descendant, that my paternal graandfather was a man named Charles Miles, who came from Franklin County, Tennessee.

I created this page some years ago in an effort to find out more about the man I previously thought was my ancestor, and to share information with other Butler family researchers. For a while after I learned that I am not a Butler descendant, I counsidered removing this page. However, after putting so much work into it, and realizing that it might be of help to other people, I decided to leave it in place. So, feel free to take a look. All I ask is that you not contact me regarding any of the people whose names are on this page. I don't know anything more about them than what you see here. Thanks!

Here are two good sources of information:

NOTE: On page 238 of his book Free African-Americans of North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina (vol. 1), author/researcher Paul Heinegg maintains that Revolutionary War veteran John Butler was a free mulatto and that he was the same John Butler who married Keziah Pritchard in Bertie County on 27 December 1797. I am not entirely convinced, first because Heinegg offers no evidence other than the fact that there was a "taxable 'Mollato' in William Butler's household in the 1774 list of Humphrey Nichols," and second, because the wife named in veteran John Butler's 1820 pension application was named Milly, not Keziah (although I concede it's possible that Keziah died before 1820 and Butler remarried). In pp. 53-66 of Chapter 3: "Butler Land," contained in his book Pell Mellers: Race and Memory in a Carolina Pocosin, another researcher/writer, K. Paul Johnson, discusses Heinegg's argument, arguing further that "there is persuasive evidence that [John Butler's Revolutionary War pension application] was fraudulent, submitted by a man far too young to have served in the Revolutionary War." Johnson also discusses the wills and estate files of John Butler, Sr. and John Butler, Jr. but it appears to me that owing to incomplete information and misinterpreted research, he has drawn some erroneous conclusions.

    JOHN BUTLER [6] (d. 1828)

    • Estate file for John Butler, 1828 (9 pages located at familysearch.org), which mention Jarvis Butler — administrator, Everitt Butler, Allen Butler, William Butler, Jethro Butler, Susan or Susanor Butler, and Abby Butler but do not indicate their relationship (if any) to the deceased; papers also mention the widow but unfortunately do not idenitify her by name. Curiously, one document in the file bears a signature, "Jarvis Butler," but another is signed "Garvis Butler X his mark," obviously by someone witnessing Jarvis making his mark (and who also misspelled his name), but if Jarvis could sign his name, why would he make an "X" on another document? This seems rather odd. NOTE: This file contains papers pertaining to three different John Butlers.

NOTE: For a while, I thought these estate papers might be for the Revolutionary War veteran John Butler, because he apparently died in 1828 (pension was only paid through the spring of 1828), but now I'm not so sure, which is why it is listed here separately from all the other John Butlers, none of whom it seems to fit.

NOTE: I have concluded that John Butler, Jr. and John P. Butler are one and the same person owing to census records indicating the man listed as either John Butler or John Butler, Jr. (only in the 1800 census) or John P. Butler are all the same age and also owing to the fact that John Butler Jr. had a brother named Silas (see John Butler Sr.'s 1807 will) and also because John P. Butler had a brother named Silas (see Silas Butler's estate papers, 1815 and 1822 deed of sale from John P. Butler to sister-in-law Elizabeth Butler, widow of "my brother Silas.")
