  • Historic Jamestowne National Park Some of our ancestors were born at James Citie and several served in the House of Burgesses here. Swann's Tavern, in ruins on site, was owned by our ancestor Col. Thomas Swann. There are statues of Pocahontas and Capt. John Smith, identical to statues in England, and a rebuilt church where the House of Burgesses first met in 1619.
  • Jamestown Settlement A museum complex devoted to the history of the Jamestown colony; includes an indoor museum and an outdoor replica of Jamestown Fort, as well as replicas of the three ships that brought the first settlers in 1607. Free admission for active-duty military and veterans on Jamestown Day (May 18).

Ancestors who served in the House of Burgesses and/or on the Governor's Council:

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY
PATERNAL

  • Farrar's Island. This is where our ancestor, William Farrar, owned land. He was one of the earliest of our ancestors to arrive in North America (1618, aboard the Neptune; during the voyage, on July 7, returning Governor De La Warr died enroute) It is also the site of the colonial "Citie of Henrico." There are two historic markers in the area: Farrar's Island marker is in front of the Advance Auto Parts store, south side of Hwy. 301/Jefferson Davis Highway, just north of Osborne Road and south of Interstate 95. Henrico Town marker is one of a group of five on Hwy. 5/New Market Road just southeast of intersection of I-295. They were along the northwest bound lane but may have been moved into a roadside park at the more or less the same spot, across the road from a Dairy Queen.
  • Dutch Gap Conservation Area and Henricus Historical Park are located on Farrar's Island. The historical park is an interactive 17th century replica of old Henrico or Henricus.
  • Kingland Plantation Site (south side of James River) APPROXIMATE, NO MARKER. This is where the plantation owned by immigrant Christopher Branch was located. Branch arrived in 1620 aboard the London Merchant with wife Mary. Their son, Thomas, was born in April 1624 at the so-called "Colledge Land" on the north side of the James River.
  • There is supposed to be a Branch family cemetery at Kingsland and also in Goochland County (north side of James River), on Route 606, but no further information can be found about the location(s).
