From the late 1500s up to 1776, nine British monarchs were also the rulers of a large portion of North America, including what is today the eastern seaboard of the United States. George III, as every American learns in school, was the last. One of the longest-serving kings, he was not only on the throne during the American War for Independence, but also the War of 1812.
