A Guide to American History in London

MAYFLOWER PUB
117 Rotherhithe Street, Rotherhithe

According to the Mayflower pub's website, it is a "traditional English pub surrounded by cobbled streets" with an "the outside decked jetty and cosy candlelit restaurant" which has "stunning river views," where diners "can spot the original 1620 mooring point of the Pilgrim Father’s Mayflower ship," adding: "Imagine who may have been sitting in your seat 400 years ago!" The website also says the Mayflower is "the oldest pub on the River Thames, London." Topped by a miniature ship resembling the Mayflower, according to all accounts, the most famous ship in American history did in fact take on some sixty-five passengers near this spot in July 1620, before sailing across the Atlantic to what is now Massachusetts. At that time, the pub was named "The Spread Eagle."
