Between September 18, 2004, when it first opened, and 2023, when the City of Dallas's Cultural Affairs Office abruptly removed all its exhibits and put them into storage at an undisclosed location, the White Rock Lake Museum, housed in what was formerly a storage space in the Bath House Cultural Center, sought to "preserve and present the human and natural history of White Rock Lake Park and its surrounding environment" through colorful, eye-catching displays (consisting of images, text, and maps), which were designed and built by Museumscapes, Inc. (the same company that designed the exhibits for the Sixth Floor Museum in downtown Dallas), using information provided by Master Naturalist Becky Rader, Historian Steven R. Butler, author of From Water Supply to Urban Oasis: A History of White Rock Lake Park, Dallas, Texas, and others. During the first few years of the nineteen-year-long existence of the museum, which was the brainchild of lakeside resident Kurt Kretsinger, visitors could also watch a brief, informative, professionally-made documentary about the lake and park on a TV set inset in an alcove. The White Rock Lake Museum, which in 2004 enjoyed the sponsorship of the Dallas Park and Recreation Department, in addition to several community organizations (most notably For Love Of The Lake, which provided the lion's share of funding), was a wonderful example of the good that a community can do when it works together to achieve a common goal.

2024 UPDATE: Although the White Rock Lake Museum no longer has a home in the Bath House Cultural Center (which many agree was the perfect location for the museum, in view of its proximity to the lake), its Board of Directors were still active and working to find it a new home somewhere in the vicinity of White Rock Lake Park, so that it can re-open and resume the purpose for which it was founded.
