This combination water fountain and historical marker, placed here on June 14, 1923 by the Jane Douglas chapter of the D.A.R., commemorates the Central National Highway of the Republic of Texas (1836-1845). It stands on the sidewalk beside Garland Road, just above the spillway.
In 1997 a drunk driver, being chased by police, hit the marker, knocking it over. His car ended up in the spillway. The marker, which was relatively undamaged, has since been re-erected in its original spot.
